I was not punished, but I was told that I needed to stop doing that. I didn't stop but I also felt that it was something I needed to hide from then on.

Yeah, my mom was only 17 when I was born and she left my dad not long after I was born so we lived with my grandparents together for a number of years and then I spent a lot of my time at my grandparents when she was working and being out and about even after we lived out on our own.
